FAQs

What is surrogacy?

Surrogacy is a method of assisted reproduction where a woman agrees to become pregnant and deliver a child(ren) for Intended Parents.

What are the different types of surrogacy?

There are two types of surrogacy: traditional and gestational. In a traditional surrogacy, the surrogate contributes her own egg and is therefore genetically related to the child. In a gestational surrogacy, the surrogate has no genetic relationship to the child. The Intended Parents provide either their own genetic material or utilize donor material. Family Choice Surrogacy only services gestational surrogates.

Why do women become surrogates?

There are many reasons a woman may choose to become a surrogate.  Often times, she wishes to enable parenthood for others.  She wishes to share the love and gratification that she gets from her child(ren) and empathizes with those who suffer from infertility.  A surrogate mother is motivated by the financial compensation, but this is secondary to the other benefits she will enjoy by giving this gift to others.

Am I a good candidate for a surrogate?

FCS has a rigorous qualification and matching process.  The initial requirements to become a surrogate are:

  • Ages 21-45
  • Has delivered a child of their own they are actively raising or have raised
  • Citizen, legal resident, or legally allowed to live in the U.S.
  • Healthy, with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of no higher than 34
  • Non-smoker
  • No recreational drug use or alcohol abuse
  • No implant birth control within the last 6 months
  • Previous healthy pregnancy and delivery
  • Does not participate in any government or public financial aid programs
  • Has reliable transportation to medical appointments (may be out of state)
  • No criminal history (also applies to spouse/partner)
  • Financially stable
  • Leads a stable and responsible lifestyle
Does Family Choice Surrogacy accept surrogates from other states?

Yes!  We accept surrogates from most states, except those who live in states in which the laws are not friendly towards surrogacy.  Contact us and we can give you more information about the laws in your state.

How long does the process take?

The answer to this question varies on a case-by-case basis. Generally speaking, the matching process may take up to several months. Once the Surrogate and Intended Parents have been matched, it can oftentimes take a year and a half to two years to complete the journey, depending on the medical procedures and more.

How much does a surrogate get compensated?

Many agencies set a “one size fits all” base compensation rate for every surrogate. At FCS, we believe that, along with our guidance, each woman must determine what compensation they are comfortable with.

  • Average gestational surrogate base compensation is $35,000-45,000 for first-time surrogates
  • Average gestational surrogate base compensation for second-time surrogates is $45,000+ for experienced surrogates
  • Many factors contribute to a gestational surrogate’s total compensation such as:
    • Maternity clothes
    • Lost wages
    • Travel expenses
    • Mental health support
    • Multiples pregnancy, and more

Once matched, the surrogate is typically paid the base compensation in 10 monthly installments once there is confirmation of a successful pregnancy.  All compensation is managed in an escrow account and FCS will assist in facilitating payments.
