If there’s one thing nearly everyone involved in surrogacy learns quickly, it’s that the journey involves a lot of hurry up and wait.

One moment, you’re filling out paperwork, scheduling appointments, or preparing for the next big milestone. Then suddenly, you’re waiting for medical records, screening results, a match, legal clearance, or the next update from a clinic.

It can be exciting, frustrating, and sometimes downright difficult. But while waiting can feel like nothing is happening, there’s often a lot happening behind the scenes.

Why Does Surrogacy Involve So Much Waiting?

A surrogacy journey involves many moving pieces, and each step needs time to be completed carefully. Medical teams, attorneys, agencies, insurance providers, surrogates, and intended parents may all be involved at different points.

Some common waiting periods can include:

  • Waiting to find the right match
  • Waiting for medical screening and clearance
  • Waiting for legal agreements to be completed
  • Waiting for insurance approval or review
  • Waiting for medication and transfer instructions
  • Waiting for embryo transfer
  • Waiting for pregnancy test results
  • Waiting for the next pregnancy milestone
  • Waiting to finally meet baby

And while it can be tempting to wonder, “Why is this taking so long?”, a slower timeline doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong. Sometimes, it simply means everyone is making sure the next step is handled properly.

The Biggest Challenge: Not Being in Control

One of the hardest parts of waiting is that many things are outside your control.

You can complete your paperwork, attend your appointments, answer your emails, and follow instructions, but you can’t always control when the next piece falls into place.

That lack of control can be especially challenging when you’re excited to move forward.

Instead of focusing on everything that still needs to happen, try focusing on the next step. What can you do today? What information are you waiting for? Is there anything you need to prepare?

Sometimes, narrowing your focus can make the waiting feel a little less overwhelming.

What Can You Do While You’re Waiting?

Waiting doesn’t mean you have to put your life on hold.

Continue doing the things that make you feel like yourself. Spend time with family and friends, keep up with hobbies, work on projects, exercise if appropriate, or simply enjoy your normal routine.

It can also help to:

Stay informed. Ask questions when you aren’t sure what’s happening or what comes next.

Stay organized. Keep paperwork, appointments, and important information in one place.

Lean on your support system. Talk to your partner, mentor, friends, family, or agency team when you need encouragement.

Limit the timeline checking. Constantly checking your phone or email can make the waiting feel even longer. Give yourself permission to step away when able.

Celebrate the small milestones. Completing a screening, receiving clearance, signing an agreement, or scheduling the next appointment are all steps forward.

Give Yourself Permission to Feel Frustrated

You don’t have to love every part of your journey.

It’s completely normal to feel impatient, disappointed, anxious, or frustrated when you’re waiting for something important. You can be incredibly grateful for your journey and still wish things would move a little faster.

Try not to judge yourself for those feelings. Instead, acknowledge them and give yourself some space to work through them.

And if you need an update or reassurance, ask for it. You don’t have to sit quietly with questions or concerns.

Remember What’s Happening Behind the Scenes

A quiet period doesn’t necessarily mean nothing is happening.

Your agency, medical team, attorneys, and other professionals may be coordinating details, reviewing information, communicating with one another, or preparing for the next stage.

Sometimes, progress looks like an exciting phone call or appointment. Other times, it looks like paperwork being reviewed or a team member working behind the scenes to make sure everything is ready.

Both are progress.

The Waiting Is Part of the Journey

Surrogacy isn’t always a straight line, and it rarely happens on exactly the timeline we imagine. There may be moments when everything seems to move quickly and others when you’re left wondering when you’ll finally get the next update.

When those moments happen, remember: waiting doesn’t mean you’re stuck.

Take a breath. Focus on what you can control. Lean on the people supporting you. Celebrate how far you’ve already come.

Because eventually, the thing you’ve been waiting for becomes the next chapter of your journey, and sometimes, those moments make the waiting feel worth it.

At Family Choice Surrogacy, we know that the waiting can be one of the hardest parts of the process. That’s why we’re here to provide communication, guidance, and support through every step, including the ones where the biggest thing happening is simply waiting for what’s next.
