After months, or sometimes years, of waiting, planning, hoping, and preparing, the moment you finally meet your baby is here. For intended parents who have welcomed their baby through surrogacy, bringing your little one home can feel incredibly exciting, emotional, and maybe even a little surreal.
While so much attention is placed on the pregnancy and birth during a surrogacy journey, there’s an entirely new chapter waiting on the other side: parenthood. And just like every surrogacy journey is different, every family’s transition into parenthood will look a little different, too.
Here are a few reminders for those first days, weeks, and months with your baby.
Give Yourself Time to Adjust
Even when you’ve spent years dreaming about becoming a parent, the reality of having a newborn can take some time to sink in. You may feel overjoyed one moment and completely overwhelmed the next, and that’s okay.
You don’t need to have everything figured out right away. Parenthood is something you learn as you go, one day at a time.
Give yourself permission to adjust to your new routine and all the emotions that come with it.
Let Go of the “Perfect” Plan
Newborns have a funny way of ignoring schedules and plans.
Feeding, sleeping, appointments, and daily routines may not always go exactly as expected. Try to stay flexible and focus on what works for your baby and your family, rather than comparing your experience to someone else’s.
There is no perfect way to be a new parent. What matters most is providing your baby with love, care, and a safe place to grow.
Accept Help When You Need It
You don’t have to do everything yourself.
If friends or family offer to bring dinner, run an errand, fold laundry, or simply give you a chance to shower and rest, let them help. Building a support system can make those early days feel much more manageable.
Remember, support doesn’t have to come only from people you know. Your agency, pediatrician, mental health professionals, parent groups, and other families who have experienced surrogacy can all be valuable resources.
Set Boundaries Around Visitors
Everyone will be excited to meet your new baby, but you get to decide when and how that happens.
It’s completely okay to limit visitors, ask people to wash their hands, postpone visits when someone is sick, or simply say, “We’re not ready for visitors today.”
Your first days at home are about settling in as a family. You don’t owe anyone a visit just because they’re excited to meet the baby.
Take Care of Each Other, Too
When a new baby arrives, it’s easy for everything else to take a backseat, including your relationship with your partner.
Check in with each other, divide responsibilities when possible, and remember that you’re both learning something new. Even small moments of connection can make a difference during those exhausting newborn days.
And don’t forget to take care of yourself. Eat when you can, stay hydrated, get rest whenever possible, and give yourself a break when you need one.
Make Space for Every Emotion
Surrogacy can be an incredibly emotional journey, and those emotions don’t necessarily disappear once your baby is born.
You may feel immense gratitude and joy while also feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, or emotional about the end of your surrogacy journey. You may even find yourself missing parts of the experience or feeling emotional about your relationship with your surrogate changing after birth.
There is room for all of those feelings. Having complicated emotions doesn’t take away from how much you love or appreciate your baby.
Create Your Own Family Traditions
After everything it took to get here, take time to celebrate your family.
Maybe it’s taking a special photo on the day you bring baby home, writing your baby a letter about their journey, creating a memory box, or starting a tradition you’ll repeat every year.
Your path to parenthood may have looked different than you originally imagined, but that story is a special part of your family’s history.
You Don’t Have to Be Perfect
Above all, remember that you don’t have to be a perfect parent. You don’t need to know exactly what you’re doing every moment. You’re learning, adapting, and growing right alongside your baby.
After everything it took to get here, it’s okay to slow down, soak it in, and simply enjoy having your baby home.
Your surrogacy journey may have brought you to parenthood, but this is where your next chapter begins. And what a beautiful chapter it will be!
